Nothing is more fun than hitting the open roads around Lexington on a motorcycle – and nothing brings the fun to a stop more abruptly than an accident.

While there is no way to completely eliminate the risk of a motorcycle crash, there are a few simple tips you can follow to greatly reduce the likelihood. Here are a few steps you can take to avoid a motorcycle accident in Kentucky.

Top 5 Tips

Below are five important things you can do to protect yourself and others on your next ride.

  1. Know your motorcycle. One of the most important things you can do to prevent accidents is to familiarize yourself with your bike. There is a reason Kentucky requires motorcyclists to pass knowledge and skills tests before they can get a motorcycle license. Beyond knowing the basics of motorcycle operation, get to know how your specific bike handles so you can respond intuitively to sudden hazards.
  2. Perform motorcycle checks before you ride. Make sure your bike is safe to ride before you hit the road. Check tire pressure and tread depth, confirm that the controls and lights are working as they should, and check the fluid levels. Do not ride if anything feels off. When in doubt, get it checked out.
  3. Educate your passengers. If you are riding with someone else on your bike, make sure the passenger understands basic motorcycle safety rules. Show them how to sit on the bike and use its footrests. If they are under 21, Kentucky motorcycle law requires them to wear a helmet.
  4. Wear appropriate motorcycling gear. Kentucky requires motorcyclists to wear approved eye-protective gear while riding. You are legally required to wear a helmet only if you are under 21, have only an instruction permit, or have had your motorcycle operator’s license for less than a year. However, it is always a good idea to wear a helmet, as they have been shown to be 37 percent effective in preventing fatal injuries. While not legally mandated, you should also consider wearing riding leathers or body armor to protect yourself in the event of a collision.
  5. Increase your visibility. Motorcycles are harder for other drivers to see than passenger or commercial vehicles. Make yourself more noticeable by keeping your running lights on and wearing lighter-colored clothing, particularly at night.
